Happiness and a Successful Career

Nov. 8, 2017

If you have a career that is financially rewarding but you are not happy, can you say you have a successful career?

A career happiness survey of more than 12,000 men and women found that just 66 percent of U.S. professionals were either "very happy" or "happy" with their jobs; a figure that doesn't correlate directly to salary amounts. Unfortunately, many people trudge along for years in jobs that don't bring them happiness. Sometimes, people stay in roles because they are afraid of change, are used to being unhappy, or aren’t aware of what it's like to be fulfilled at work.

When you find a career that makes you happy, the rewards can be immeasurable.

Happiness is Good for Both Employees and Employers

Of course, being happy makes you feel good, but there are also several other long-lasting benefits for both employees and employers. Happy employees tend to be healthier and are better at innovating, collaborating, and interacting with clients, peers, and managers.

Perhaps not surprisingly, this makes happy employees more valuable to their employers, so they tend to earn more and achieve greater success. It's not that financial success breeds happiness but rather that happiness can lead to career success.

Happiness is a Choice

You can choose to be happy, to look for the positive and find meaning in your everyday work. Your surroundings, your work environment, the people you interact with , and the training and guidance you receive all play a part in impacting your happiness, though.

There are things you can do to improve your happiness, including making note of the things you are grateful for each day, recognizing and documenting positive experiences, exercising , and meditating. Sometimes, making a career change is the fastest and most effective way to increase both your happiness and your success.

Being an Independent Insurance Agent Can Lead to Happiness

Working as an independent insurance agent offers a variety of benefits that can help foster and sustain career happiness and success. Two of those benefits are the flexibility that comes with the job, and the satisfaction that comes from helping other people.

Schedule Flexibility

When you are an independent insurance agent, you are largely in control of your own schedule. You decide when you are going to have meetings with current and prospective insurance clients. This control means you don't have to feel guilty when you want to take time off during the day for medical appointments or to attend a child's or grandchild's sporting event, play, or school program. Work-life balance, which is an elusive catch-phrase, at best, used in many other industries, is a reality for insurance professionals.

Many insurance agents find helping their clients to be enormously rewarding, both on a personal and professional level.
